The First Stop: An Ancient Ocean
Take Megalodon’s tooth taken from West Java in Indonesia. About 20 million years ago the regions that are today dry were part of warm marine ecosystems. Megalodons as well as other marine creatures lived in these prehistoric seas, along with Megalodons.
As modern sharks do, Megalodon constantly produced teeth and then lost them. Some of the teeth later settled in sediments from the sea. If the conditions were right burial could protect them for long enough for fossilization to occur.
Then Geology Overtook
The next chapter was incredibly slow. Sediments built up. Minerals interacted with each other and submerged material. The effects of geological forces changed the landscape, and previously underwater environments later became part of our land.
